How Small Hole EDM Works

Small Hole EDM works by using rapid electrical sparks to erode material instead of applying physical force. A thin tubular electrode delivers controlled electrical pulses while dielectric fluid flushes away debris, allowing the machine to drill tiny, deep, and precise holes in even the hardest metals. This process ensures clean edges, tight tolerances, and accurate results, making it ideal for start holes, cooling holes, and micro-feature applications.

Advantages of Small Hole EDM

01

1. Ability to Drill Extremely Small Holes

Small Hole EDM can produce holes as small as 0.4 mm (0.016 in) in diameter, which is difficult or impossible with conventional drilling methods.

02

Works on Hard and Tough Materials

It can machine hardened steels, carbides, titanium, and superalloys without tool wear issues, making it ideal for aerospace, medical, and mold-making industries.

03

High Aspect Ratio Capability

EDM can create deep holes with high length-to-diameter ratios (often >100:1) while maintaining straightness and accuracy.

04

No Mechanical Stress

Since EDM is a non-contact process, there is no cutting force, reducing the risk of deformation or damage to delicate parts.

05

Ability to Drill Through Complex Shapes and Hard-to-Reach Areas

EDM can drill holes in curved or angled surfaces and even through pre-hardened components, which is challenging for conventional drills.

06

Cost Effective

For complex parts and hard materials, EDM can be more cost-effective than traditional machining methods. It reduces tool wear costs.
